First Blog Response

What made you select this course as one of your up to six choices for College Colloquium?

For example, do you have a special interest or prior expertise in film or in the Greeks and Romans? Have you actually seen some of the movies we'll discuss this semester?

I myself watched many of these movies as a child on German TV. Back then, I just enjoyed the spectacle and epic scale of these movies. Later, as I studied Latin and Greek and learned more and more about the actual ancient world, I got a bit disenchanted with them because I now notice how inaccurate the movies' representation of history usually is. On the other hand, though, these movies weren't meant to be documentaries, but to offer entertainment, and in that respect, they definitely succeed, as I hope you'll find too.

  1. I have never really had an interest in ancient Rome, but the topic caught my eye as I was selecting a colloquium course. This wasn't my first choice, although I am really happy that I was put into this course. I am going in to this class hoping that I learn more about cinema in general and also in the history of Rome itself.

    1. You definitely will learn a lot of interesting stuff. I always learn new things myself even though this is, I think, the fifth time I'm teaching this particular course.

  2. I chose this class because I know very little about Roman and Greek culture. Of course I took the classes in middle school where we skimmed over Greek mythology and the basic history of the epic time period, but we never really got into depth. This seemed like a great opportunity to learn about a topic that interests me and who doesn't like watching movies. In my lifetime I haven't seen that many movies, my family wasn't really into TV so I haven't seen a lot of the classics so I am excited to analyze them in depth.

    1. Thanks, Eva. I was just wondering whom to give credit for this and the other three Unknown responses. I think you can still change the Unknown to your name in Settings.
Regarding the movies, I think you'll really enjoy a lot of these movies. All of them are Classics that everyone should have seen, and you'll notice that modern movie makers, even in completely unrelated genres, still like to quote these movies.

  3. I chose this colloquim class because I thought that it would be interesting to watch movies and then analyze it. I also thought that it would be fun to watch movies from different times period and see the difference in film and resources the movies had. Specifically the Greek and Roman subject is very interesting to me. There are so many variations of Greece and Rome portrayed in movies. Seeing all the different styles is interesting to me.

    1. Preparing this class, I learned a lot about film history, both in this country and in Europe, and the development of film technology, and I'm glad I get to share at least some of that with you.

  4. Honestly I picked this colloquium because it was one of the top ones on the list, I didn’t pay attention to the part that said list them in order of preference. However, I still picked this one as one of my six because not only I find film study interesting, I also would like to learn more about the Roman culture. I don’t have a lot of knowledge in either of these areas, I haven’t heard of most of the movies we’re going to analyze but Im ready to learn and hopefully get to know my class mates and my professor.

    1. I had no idea it paid off in this way to have a course title start with "Ancient." Good to know. ;-)

  5. I selected this class because I am interested in film. I figured it would be another opportunity, along with my other cinema study class, to learn about the different types of film from different parts of the world.

    1. You'll definitely get to see and analyze some really cool movies in this class, including some that were very innovative in their time, like "Cabiria".

  6. The reason I took this class is because I have always had an interest in the culture of Ancient Rome and Greece. I don’t know a lot about the history but that is why I’m in here. To learn more about the history and culture.

  7. I chose this class because out of all of the colloquium options, this and a few select other classes stood out to me. In general, I really enjoy watching movies and I have a brief history with Latin and Greek/Roman mythology. Latin was a required class at my middle school which helped to kick-start my interest in the subject. Overall Roman history has been something my education has briefly crossed paths with every once in a while and is something I look forward to getting back into!

    1. I had no idea that any of you knew any Latin. Great! Please bring that in whenever you can. It'll definitely come in handy. Now I just need to figure out who you are.;-)

  8. I chose this course as one of my six choices for colloquium because I’ve always been interested in movies and I plan to pursue a film studies minor. When I saw that there was this course I thought it was going to be right up my alley. I have also always had an interest in history and ancient history so combining the two sounded super interesting.

    1. Thanks for identifying yourself! This blogger stuff is not completely intuitive, which is why I wanted you all to start with it as soon as possible so we can iron out the technical problems. In Settings, you can probably add your name somewhere so you don't show up as Unknown.

  10. History was always an interesting subject for me, and the fact that it's Greek/Roman history is a nice bonus about the class. However, I was more interested in expanding my critical thinking and analysis skills. The act (or art) of criticism always interested me, whether watching satirical reviewers on YouTube or reading reviews of films online, picking something apart to that length sounds like fun.

    1. I'm a history buff myself, so know you'll get your fill with this. Another feature of the subject of this Colloquium that I myself enjoy is that it made me a much more conscious and critical consumer of movies.

  11. The reason why I chose this course as one of my six is because the idea of analyzing movies caught my attention. I've never had a particular interest in Ancient Greece or Rome, but that just means this will all be new to me. I have always been interested in movies, and learning how to think more critically about every detail that goes into them will be very interesting!

  12. There's indeed a lot that goes into a movie, and I am looking forward to discussing our selection of films and picking your brains. I'm sure all of you have some expertise, whether it be in music, horseback riding, costume design, art history, history, or films, that will enhance our analysis of these movies.
